The Air Ambulance is an important part of the NHS's ambulance service. With 3 helicopters based at Durham Tees Valley Airport (formerly Teesside Airport) (G-NHAA), Carlisle Airport (G-HEMS) and Otterburn Northumberland (G-WAAN), they can reach anywhere within the 500 mile boundary a lot faster than a conventional ambulance. Many of the places are impassable to motor vehicles thus saving crucial time for patients.
